Trees for Peace
Hello my friends and fellow green industry professionals,
I hope that this finds you well and your family and loved ones safe. Like
many, I have been almost immobilized by the events of the past week. Also
like many, I have been trying to think of ways to do *something* -- most of
us have. As a green industry professional, the thought of planting trees to
honor the fallen came to the forefront.
I am forwarding a letter I received today from Judy Thomas, a horticultural
educator and consultant in Oakland, CA. I certainly haven't worked out any
details, but I hope that we can all make an effort to plant trees for
peace -- in the Southwest and everywhere.
I can certainly help promote any events or tree plantings you,
your company or your association organizes.
Fall is for planting -- let's plant trees for peace.
Thanks for your consideration,
Helen Stone
I have submitted the following to the "Letters to the Editor" of the San
Francisco Chronicle. I also wish to share it with you. This is my way
of waging a "War of Peace."

PLANT A TREE FOR PEACE
The tragic events of September 11, 2001 are a call for us to seek ways
to defend ourselves from terrorism while dedicating our lives to
developing world peace. If each one of us plants just one tree for
peace, thousands of "peace groves" will soon flourish in loving memory
of those whose lives have been lost and will raise the quality of life
in communities that lack basic resources.
Trees are symbols of peace, endurance and resurrection worldwide. They
favor no religious group or culture. Whether oak or beech, spruce or
fir, redwood or cryptomeria, banyan or olive, their beauty, longevity
and serenity evoke the true meaning of life ? which is to love one
another.
Terrorists may sow seeds of destruction; I will plant trees for peace.
